The law and travelling abroad

All business vehicles must carry their vehicle registration document when travelling abroad.

However, this does not apply if the vehicle is a daily rental business car; or the car is on a contract hire lease.

This is because the rental and leasing companies own the vehicle. These companies do not let the original registration form out of their control because of potential theft or fraud.

Instead, such business cars must have a Vehicle on Hire Certificate.

This is known as a VE 103.

A VE 103 is the only legal alternative to the registration document. Photocopies of the V5C (registration document) and letters of authority are not acceptable.

If police or customs stop you without a valid registration document or VE 103, your vehicle will almost certainly be impounded until the correct forms are supplied.
