SEAT Ibiza Ecomotive road test report

SEAT Ibiza Ecomotive 1.4 TDI 3dr

What is it?

Sporty brand SEAT’s supermini that’s eco rather than sporty. Hence the Ecomotive name tag.

This means the three-cylinder diesel has revised engine management, improved aerodynamics, longer gearing, a particulate filter to eliminate most of the sooty exhaust bits, and low rolling resistance tyres.

This adds up to over 74mpg fuel economy and just 99g/km CO2. Which means no road tax, and just 13% company car tax.

What’s hot?

  • Three-cylinder engine delivers punchy performance…
  • …and tuneful off-beat note
  • Basic, functional interior but none the worse for it
  • Despite the fuel economy, there’s still standard air con
  • Brilliant economy and low, low company car tax
  • Qualifies for 100% first year writing down allowance
  • Qualifies for band A road tax – which means nothing to pay

What’s not?

  • Diesel engine noise is far too intrusive
  • Ridges and bumps thump through cabin
  • Wheels and wheel covers look weedy
  • High lip to boot area

Verdict

Extraordinarily good fun. Punchy performance from the characterful three-cylinder engine makes this feel nothing like the fuel miserly eco warrior its name suggests. There are downsides: it’s noisy, and a bit basic. The SEAT Ibiza range is also being replaced this year, although the Ibiza Ecomotive will continue into 2009. But consider the upsides: the frugal economy; the low company car tax; lack of road tax; and corporation tax advantages. An unlikely business car on paper – but one that adds up.
