No tyre gauge? Use a 20p piece: if that band around the outside of the coin is hidden, the tread should be OK

Those found to be in breach of this law can face fines of up to £2500 and three penalty points for each offending tyre.

In 2012 more than 170 drivers a week were successfully prosecuted for driving on defective tyres.

TyreSafe is urging drivers, and company car managers, to perform the quick and simple ‘20p test’ to check the safety and legality of their tyres.

By simply inserting a 20p coin into the main grooves of a tyre, and seeing if the outer band of the coin is still visible, drivers will know that the tread depth is probably too low.
