New Ford Focus Zetec 1.6 TDCI 5dr business car road test report

Ford Focus Zetec 1.6 TDCI 5dr

Ford Focus Zetec 1.6 TDCI 115PS Start Stop

What is it?

THE most important car of 2011. The third-generation of Ford’s compact family car is completely new: from the chassis, to the controversial styling to the range of petrol and diesel engines. It’s also a world car, and will be sold pretty much unchanged throughout the globe. Does that mean Ford has taken its eye off the ball? Or is this the best business car you can buy? We tested the £18,495 115PS 1.6-litre TDCI Zetec model to find out.

What’s hot?

  • Make no mistake, this is still the best driving compact hatch…
  • …with smooth electric power steering and standard torque vectoring
  • Add in wider front and rear tracks and it’s agile and fun
  • Suspension is taut but still comfy, little road or wind noise
  • Mobile phone-inspired cabin full of premium materials, ambient lighting
  • Optional gadgets include lane keep assist, low-speed crash mitigation…
  • …automatic parking, road sign recognition, the list goes on
  • Punchy diesel returns 67mpg combined and emits just 109g/km
  • Which gives it the advantage of 100% first year capital allowances
  • And 13% BIK company car tax
  • Start-stop is fitted as standard too
  • More room in the back for passengers

What’s not?

  • Looks a bit bland. Those triangular front air intakes are just odd
  • Bootspace is poor – beaten by both Astra and Golf
  • Expensive P11D price. Add a few options…
  • …and it’s all-too easy to tip the price over £20,000
  • The ride can get jittery on cars with 17-inch wheels and larger

Business Car Manager Road Test Rating

Has Ford pulled it off? Just about. It’s by no means perfect – it’s easy to inflate the price, the looks aren’t quite right and the boot is small – but the Focus packs a huge amount of technology into a classy, quality package and the driving experience is mature, but still by far the most fun in the sector too. A VW Golf is a better all-rounder – particularly when it comes to residuals – but it’s now a two-horse race in this class.
