Honda Jazz 1.4i road test report

Honda Jazz 1.4i-VTEC ES 5dr

Honda Jazz 1.4i-VTEC ES 5dr

What is it?

All-new version of Honda’s super-reliable and super-practical Jazz supermini fitted out with 1.4-litre engine. There’s more streamlined styling and a new 1.4-litre 16-valve engine offering 100PS – the old Jazz had 83PS. The new Honda Jazz range is split on engine size between ranges: the 1.2 has S and SE; the 1.4 plusher ES and top-of-the-range EX. The 1.4 is also available with i-SHIFT automated manual transmission.

What’s hot?

  • The styling is more modern
  • But brilliant practicality remains the same with ‘Magic Seats’
  • Lower all the seats and you have a load interior 2.4m long
  • Alternatively, flip up the rear seat bases…
  • …and you have a tall load area using the rear seat footwell
  • And there’s more storage below the boot floor in the ‘Double Trunk’
  • Standard spec includes alloys, air con and anti-skid VSA
  • New 1.4 engine provides low-down go
  • Typical Honda engine ‘double character’ that’s docile around town…
  • …or rev-happy and exhilarating on the open road
  • While fuel consumption is a good 52.3mpg
  • Rated at 15% for business car tax (128g/km CO2)
  • Brilliant brakes stop the Jazz securely
  • Seats comfortable so long journeys won’t be a problem

What’s not?

  • Engine noise intrusive
  • Restless ride fidgets and bounces
  • Scratchy interior plastics
  • Steering needs more feel

Business Car Manager Road Test Rating

This 1.4-litre Honda Jazz ES provides the best bits of the new Jazz at an affordable price. The spec means you get all of the wonderful Jazz practicality, while the 1.4 engine provides the punch that the 1.2 lacks, even if it is less smooth. And with a business car tax rating of 15%, plus typical Jazz reliability, running costs should be low too.
