VW Polo Moda 1.2 business car road test

VW Polo Moda 1.2 60PS 5dr

Volkswagen Polo Moda 1.2 60PS 5dr

What is it?

THE Car of the Year, but in fuel-saving 1.2-litre engined form. The VW Polo is available with this three-cylinder engine in both 60PS and 70PS power outputs; our business car test is on the 60PS model. The Moda trim sits between entry-level S and SE, with a list price of £11,895. The same car with air conditioning is £12,595.

What’s hot?

  • Reduced Golf looks but front splitter gives it a racy look
  • Lovely gravelly engine note from three-cylinder engine
  • Engine spins easily in town for cut and thrust traffic…
  • Nicely built cabin feels sound and sensible
  • Ergonomics are straightforward and easy to use
  • Rear seats flip forward for flat load base
  • Split boot floor provides useful hidden storage
  • Useful hooks in rear boot space to hold shopping bags
  • Sure footed handling, nicely direct steering
  • Over 50mpg and low CO2 means 15% company car BiK banding
  • Qualifies for 20% writing down allowance
  • Standard anti-skid ESP and ASR traction control

What’s not?

  • Engine runs out of puff when negotiating motorway traffic
  • Long shift to reverse can snag (but when has a VW not done this?)
  • Ride on the firm side rather than supple
  • Err, not much else

Business Car Manager Road Test Rating

It’s not flashy; it doesn’t bring anything new to the party; but the VW Polo feels such a complete car, so polished, so thoroughly thought through that you know it will be a reliable and enjoyable friend for life. There’s space enough for four and a willing, rorty engine, which just adds to the fun. Ideal for an urban runabout; for those looking at longer journeys consider the 1.4 version. But it’s little wonder this car won car of the year – it’s a great all-rounder that’s smart for business, economical to run, and practical for weekend use.
