THE Frankfurt Motor Show (12-22 September) will see the debut of the new BMW 4 Series Coupe.
The BMW 4 Series is the coupe version of the BMW 3 Series saloon and this is the first time BMW has given its compact saloon and coupe separate series numbers.
BMW says the switch has been made to maintain consistency with what happens higher up the range: BMW’s executive saloon is the 5 Series but its coupe equivalent is the 6 Series.
The change in the numbering system also emphasises the greater differentiation between the two models.
Although the BMW 3 Series and 4 Series share the same engines and crash structures, the 4 Series has its own suspension set-up and design.
Matt Collins, BMW product manager, said:
“The BMW 4 Series is the new name for the 3 Series Coupe. In fact, it’s a new BMW series.
“The 4 series has a different design, a more aesthetic look, with coupe styling and a wider track. It also has more as standard specification than the 3 Series.”
The BMW 4 Series equipment includes 18 inch alloys, Sports seats (except SE) and BMW Business Edition Media package.

Prices for the 420d Coupe start at £30,795. M Sport models will cost £3000 more than the SE level.
Five further engine options will join the range later including xDrive four-wheel drive derivatives (which cost a £1500 premium over the standard coupe).
