MINI Electric Concept: promises electrifying performance and handling

MINI will display its Electric Concept at the Frankfurt Show in September (September 14-24).

It takes the brand on from its original MINI E which laid the foundations for electric car strategy for the BMW Group.

While the MINI Electric Concept is just that – BMW Group expects the electric MINI to be in production by 2019.

While the powertrain is to be electric, MINI is promising the sorty of performance and agility you would expect from a MINI. And with the launch of the BMW i3s sports model, we can expect the MINI to deliver on a performance version.

“With its characteristic go-kart feel and powerful electric motor, the MINI Electric Concept is great fun to drive while also being completely suitable for everyday use – and producing zero emissions to boot. That’s how we at MINI envisage electric mobility in tomorrow’s world,” said Peter Schwarzenbauer, BMW AG board member, responsible for MINI.

The new MINI Electric concept is still recognisably a MINI thanks to the hexagonal radiator grille and circular headlights. Identifying features on the exterior include the contrasting silver and yellow colour scheme that is reminiscent of the earlier MINI E, as well as the distinctive E badge. The Frankfurt show car is finished in Reflection Silver – a matt liquid metal colour shade.

In addition, the radiator grille and front headlights have been reinterpreted to reflect the emission-free technology under the bonnet. As the electric drive unit does not require any cooling air, the radiator grille is closed for superior aerodynamics.

MINI says that the car’s aerodynamics have also been optimized to increase the car’s range – although no word yet on the power output or range of what the production model might feature.

The Frankfurt debut of the MINI Electric Concept follows the launch of the brand’s first ever electrified production model, the MINI Countryman Plug-in Hybrid earlier in 2017, which BMW Group says has “impressed customers with its combination of versatility, handling and the option of zero local emissions.”

MINI says the new Electric Concept is the next stage in the electrification narrative.
