RECENT news regarding the September fall in new car registrations may be concerning for some, but the VW Golf GTE doesn’t appear to have got the message.

According to figures from VW it seems sales of the plug-in hybrid Golf were up 300% on September 2016. It looks like the GTE is building a steady following.

And why not? After all, the VW Golf GTE offers all the benefits of a regular Golf – space, comfort, practicality – plus the latest hybrid technology to make the whole thing as economical as possible.

With a full tank of petrol and a fully charged battery the Golf GTE can travel around 515 miles. That’s at the higher end of most people’s diesel range but it does it with a clean and efficient 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine. The same electric motor that aids efficiency also helps push the Golf GTE to 60mph in under eight seconds and on to a top speed of 138mph. Efficient, but also fun.

The GTE has the ability to travel 31 miles on electricity alone so if your daily commute is less than 15 miles each way you’ll be running with zero emissions. The lithium-ion battery can also be recharged in just three hours 45 minutes from a domestic socket.

You can’t have the latest technology under the bonnet and not in the cabin so the Golf GTE also features a broad range of interior equipment.

Available in two trim levels the Golf GTE features Volkswagen’s advanced Composition Media System which includes an eight-inch colour touchscreen, CD player, DAB radio, and Bluetooth telephone connection all feature as standard.

The VW Golf GTE Advance adds satellite navigation, heated front seats, and tinted glass at the rear. Heated windscreen washer jets and headlight washers increase the list of standard equipment.

Both variants also feature climate control, unique styling features and Active Info Display: a 12.3-inch TFT screen in the instrument cluster with customisable menus and display.

Take advantage of the Government Plug-in Car Grant and the VW Golf GTE starts from £28,135 – the GTE Advance can be had from £29,635 – so BIK tax rates are reasonably bearable for most company car drivers.

VW has already sold more than 3,000 so far this year and that number is only going in one direction. There must be a very good reason for that.
