What’s not
- For all its power and appeal, the Golf GTD, as a diesel, can’t quite hope to match the crisp-edged response of the petrol-engined GTI.
- While the Golf GTD is not over-priced for what it offers according to most benchmarks, equivalent sister models from Skoda’s and SEAT’s Leon and Octavia ranges are cheaper
Business Car Manager car review verdict
This VW Golf GTD comes closer than any of its predecessors to delivering on the promise held out by the badge – Golf GTI performance with diesel economy.
If this latest Golf GTD doesn’t quite have the sharp edge of the petrol GTI, it’s still very quick, thanks to all that diesel torque, and it has a distinctively appealing character of its own.
The big plus, of course, is that it combines its impressive power and pace with fuel consumption and emissions that only a few years ago were the preserve of specialised economy models such as Volkswagen’s own Golf BlueMotion.
For UK business motorists, that means a very light company car tax burden for a vehicle with such strong performance.
Buy one of these, and you really can just about have your company car cake and eat it.
