What is it?

GT Sport version of classic VW Golf hatchback. Features lowered suspension, twin exhausts, 17-inch alloys. Choice of two petrol versions (140PS, 170PS) and two diesels (140PS and 170PS): this is 140PS 2.0-litre turbo diesel with fast-shifting DSG auto gearbox.

What’s hot?

  • Sporty looks, smart alloys
  • Superbly crafted interior
  • Direct steering, go-kart style response
  • Soft blue lighting of dashboard dials
  • Low-down pull of diesel engine
  • All cabin controls are so logical, easy to use

What’s not?

  • Noisy engine
  • More expensive on tax than petrol GT Sport 140
  • DSG auto kicks down too readily

Business Car Manager Road Test Rating

Getting into a Golf is always such a reassuring experience. Controls are logical, build is superb, and you know you’re buying into a solid, dependable driving experience. But the diesel GT Sport 140 doesn’t really make business sense. Yes, there’s marginally better fuel economy than the petrol equivalent, but it’s more expensive to buy, to contract hire, and more expensive on tax. Our choice is the VW Golf GT Sport 1.4 TFSi 140: all the pleasure of a sporting Golf in a more tax efficient package.
