THE Vauxhall Grandland X, completing the Vauxhall SUV line up after Mokka and Crossland, is set to be the brand’s second-biggest-selling retail model behind Corsa.

It’s also the second model from Vauxhall to be based on PSA Groupe DNA, as it features Peugeot 3008 underpinnings and sat-nav software.

The Techline Nav variant has been designed for fleet use in mind and its Sport Nav sibling variant is essentially its twin, with only a minor twist on the wheel design keeping the two of them apart. We tested the Grandland X 1.6-litre Sport Nav diesel and 1.2-litre petrol.

Since then a new top-of-the-range Ultimate trim level for Grandland X has launched, highly specified with leading-edge technology as standard and powered by a new 177PS 2.0-litre turbo diesel with eight-speed automatic as standard and priced from £33,995 on-the-road.

Why would you want to drive a Vauxhall Grandland X?

• The Grandland X’s design with sculptured bodywork – lines draw the eye back to the finer rear – gives a sporty appearance.
• With the 60/40 rear seat split, the boot space of the Grandland X increases from 514 litres to 1,652 litres, which is perfect for commuters with families.
• The raised seating in the rear means passengers don’t feel good space in the back and have more leg room. There’s a rear heated seat option and the dual USB port in the rear is also family-friendly.
• The standard tech of the Grandland X beats most rivals charging extra for the same stuff. Emergency Brake Assist, Pedestrian Alert, Blind Spot Detection and Driver Drowsiness Alert are just some of the safety features, while Auto Cruise Control, Park Assist and a hands-free tailgate mechanism offer convenience to a busy commuter.
• The interior tech is also good with CarPlay and Auto mirroring options helping to keep employees working while on the road. Onstar support helps find destinations in unfamiliar areas and will automatically call into the car in the event of an accident—particularly practical for time-poor, high functioning individuals whose organisational skills aren’t their strong suit.

What might you put off a Vauxhall Grandland X?

• With the two smaller engines we tried the performance of the Grandland X isn’t great. The 1.2-litre engine is undersized for the bulk of the car and the 1.6-litre didn’t fare much better with quite a heavy vehicle.
• Disappointingly only the Elite Nav spec comes with a 360 reversing camera as standard.
• Automatic Transmission is available for a further £1,500 – but is a must-have since the Grandland X’s manual gearbox is a little clunky.

Verdict on the Vauxhall Grandland X

Bought in Amethyst Purple, the Grandland X would be a stunning executive car for a good price… to look at.

The Griffin badge has been extended through the lights to give a wider, more robust appearance than true – and it’s these design touches which go some way to carry the car.
