Does flexible working mean the end of commuting? It might certainly be the case for some. But as more and more staff work from home, the company car will take on greater importance

FLEXIBLE working is fast becoming a norm rather than a ‘recent trend’.

A recent report from The Future Laboratory has predicted commuting will soon become a thing of the past.

Office space will be replaced by wi-fi hubs. The traditional office-worker will disappear into a work-from-home culture.

Which means flexible transport solutions will become crucial to every employer.

Small businesses are at the front line of this phenomenon.

Flexible working demands flexible transport solutions

The SME (Small- and Medium-sized Enterprises) culture often allows for flexible working practices to be adopted quicker than in larger organisations.

As a result, the days of an SME community dominated by home-based employees may well be just around the corner. This could have a huge impact on vehicle leasing for small businesses.

The company car will no longer simply be a perk: it will become a key business tool, ensuring employees can be truly mobile in order to keep up with more flexible working patterns.

As the working population becomes more spread out, the demands on company vehicles will increase. The onus will be on business owners to develop transport policies that keep up with these shifts.

That doesn’t mean people will spend more time on the road. But when they do need to get from A to B, cars will provide the only option flexible enough to meet their demands. As a result, companies that never needed to provide company cars in the past will be doing so as a norm in 10 years’ time.

The challenge for those companies involved in the provision of transport to SMEs is clear: meet this demand in a responsible way.

The issues of duty of care, greener business cars, cost efficiency and fuel management will become crucial to the whole SME community. It will be on a scale that simply does not exist right now.

It’s up to car leasing brokers and other SME suppliers to ensure that any SME with new business car requirements needs are fully aware of all of these issues. And create business car strategies that match these new business needs.
