The World Health Organisation (WHO) found that chronic traffic noise causes at least one in every fifty heart attacks. Due to their primarily rubbery nature, roads laid with recycled tyres actually reduce surface noise by up to 20 per cent.

The very earliest tyres were not made from rubber at all. In fact, to start with they were made with bands of iron and later steel, before being attached to carts and wagons.

The ‘tyre’ would be heated and placed on the wheel, where it would then cool and contract around the base.

In Formula One there is only one supplier – currently, Pirelli. During a typical race, the wheels have to withstand changing forces that include acceleration from rest to 99 mph and back, in as little as four seconds.

Pit crews can also change a tyre in as little as 3 seconds.

Interestingly, most people don’t know much about their tyres whatsoever. In a recent survey, 40 per cent of drivers admitted to not knowing how to check their tyre’s depth or tread.

Another 70 per cent didn’t even know what the legal minimum tread depth was (1.6 millimetres in the UK).
