Need for speed - what do F1 drivers drive when not racing

22 December 2017

FORMULA One racers have an unrelenting need for speed, and that need for speed extends to their personal car collection too. Quite a few of today’s current crop of F1 racers drive supercars that are not only gorgeous looking, but also fast and powerful, just like those made-for-speed race cars.

So, what supercars do today’s F1 stars drive? Take a look below for the answers.

Fernando Alonso

Ferrari 458 Italia

As double World Champion, this Spanish icon has for himself an equally iconic collection of cars led by his 458 Italia, a certified beauty with a monster V8 engine. Alonso also drives a GranCabrio and a Quattroporte, both made by Ferrari’s sister brand, Maserati. The former is a four-seat convertible based on the Gran Turismo, while the latter is an exquisitely styled sport sedan with an aluminium V8 engine.

Kimi Raikkonen

Ferrari F12 Berlinetta

Raikkonen is nicknamed “The Ice Man” and he has quite a cool collection of supercars. Among his best cars are the multi-award winning Ferrari F12 Berlinetta and the limited edition Ferrari LaFerrari (literally, “The Ferrari”), Ferrari’s first ever hybrid sports car that is as fast and powerful as its other models.

Sebastian Vettel

Formula One racers
Mercedes-Benz SL-65 AMG Black Series

This four-time F1 world champion from Germany drives a variety of cars off the track, and his collection includes a Mercedes-Benz SL-65 AMG Black Series, which is the performance version of the SL 65 AMG. He also owns the gorgeous and powerful Infiniti QX70, whose brand ambassador happens to be the German sensation himself. In fact, Vettel has been the face of the Nissan-owned Inifiniti series for some time now. He even has a limited edition model named after him: the Sebastian Vettel Infiniti QX70.

Jenson Button

Ferrari F40

Button is quite a fan of the Prancing Horse, even though he has never driven for Ferrari. The 2009 World Champion, now committed to GT racing, owns several Ferraris, notably a Ferrari F40, a Ferrari 355 GTS (the first car he ever bought as an F1 driver), a Ferrari 550, and a Ferrari 275 GTS Cabriolet.

Despite an already impressive car collection, Button admits that two cars continue to tickle his fancy – the McLaren F1 and the Ferrari 250 GTO. The 37-year-old McLaren-Honda stalwart is quick to admit, though, that he might never be able to own his two other dream cars because they are even out of his price range.

Lewis Hamilton

Pagini Zonda 760 LH

Lewis is right at the top when it comes to car collections, as his garage is home to multiple supercars. The most notable car is a custom-built Pagani Zonda 760 LH, which is one of only 13 ever made, and the only one made with a manual transmission because, well, Hamilton specifically asked for it.

The four-time World Champion also owns a Mercedes-AMG SLS Black Series, a McLaren P1 (and 903hp twin-turbo V8-hybrid), and a customised Ferrari LaFerrari (Hamilton ditched the standard black roof in favour of a completely red finish). Just for good measure, the 32-year-old Brit also has a 1966 Shelby 427 Cobra with a 7.0 L race engine and a fully customised 1967 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500.

Hamilton’s extravagant car collection reflects his astonishing career. Party Poker published an article on his fierce rivalry with Felipe Massa, and discussed how Hamilton won his first F1 world title in 2008 by a solitary point. This is thanks to a remarkable late push that saw him make a mad dash to the finish line on the final bend to secure fifth place – and enough points to hold off Felipe Massa.

Since that dramatic victory, the British superstar has never looked back, winning three more titles in 2014, 2015, and 2017 and making a strong case as the best driver of his generation.

Max Verstappen

Formula One racers
Porsche 911 GT3 RS

A prodigy in the purest sense, Verstappen is one of the rising stars of the sport. In 2016, the then 18-year-old Red Bull Racing driver was awarded the Trofeo Lorenzo Bandini, and he celebrated in style by purchasing a Porsche 911 GT3 RS afterwards. The Porsche 911 GT3 RS, worth around $400,000, is a high-performance model that is perfect for the young Dutch-Belgian phenomenon.

Daniel Ricciardo

Formula One racers
Aston Martin Valkyrie

There is still no official word yet on whether Red Bull Racing’s Ricciardo is already driving this supercar, but the Australian driver has reportedly ordered quite a car: the Aston Martin Valkyrie. Built by Aston Martin, Red Bull Racing, and a few other manufacturers, this upcoming production hybrid electric sports car is said to be in a league of its own, with a price tag somewhere between $2 to $3 million.
