Businesses operating in London have the opportunity to save over £2000 per year – by choosing the correct car.

Transport for London (TfL) is considering a 100% exemption for cars that have emissions below 120g/km, which are in Vehicle Excise Duty bands A and B.

At the same time TfL is planning to raise the charge for more polluting cars.

For companies that run cars in the highest VED band (more than 225g/km) the charge will rise to £25 per day – a potential yearly cost of £6500.

Subject to consultation, TfL says the changes will be introduced in 2008.

“These proposals could be advantageous to business,” commented Dean Woodward, consulting & risk manager, DaimlerChrysler Fleet Management (DCFM).

“The changes are designed to reduce the car’s impact on climate change. Manufacturers now make some highly efficient cars that qualify for the 100% discount. We’ve listed some of our favourites below.”

Hybrid vehicles, such as Honda’s Civic Hybrid, will continue to benefit from a 100% discount.
