Electric Vehicles to get business mileage rates
AT last, it appears that HMRC has eventually recognised that company car drivers in electric vehicles need to have their own business mileage rates – or AFRs (Advisory Fuel Rates).”
And that’s thanks very much to the ACFO organisation of fleet operators that has diligently campaigned for a specific EV rate with HMRC.
The new EV company car business mileage rates will be introduced from the beginning of September. The new rates will be know as Advisory Electricity Rates.
ACFO Chairman John Pryor said “this change is a major leap and will assist all fleets operating and seeking to introduce pure electric cars.” For more on this story – go here.
Van VED reform could hurt small businesses
I don’t think anyone thinks that reforming van VED to encourage lower emission van choices is a BAD THING.
Far from it. The Government is currently in consultation on the matter: it wants to bring van VED in line with car VED, ie base it on CO2 emissions.
This has its problems, as industry and business bodies – the BVRLA and FSB respectively – have pointed out: lack of choice.
And the fact that the proposed VED system would actually encourage older vans…
Choice is certainly an issue. But I also think lack of communication is another. Most small traders hardly travel any distance in their vans because their work is local. Making them ideal candidates for electric vans. But rarely do I see the benefits of lower cost, customer recognition and so on spelt out to them. It’s a real opportunity for EV makers.
