IT is going to be a busy year for new superminis, as alongside the new Fiesta, there’s an all-new fifth-generation SEAT Ibiza – making its show debut at Geneva.

New from the ground up, this new version features the latest AO version of Volkswagen’s innovative MQB platform, which will also underpin other forthcoming Volkswagen Group superminis.

One of the biggest disappointments of the outgoing Ibiza was the dated feel to the interior. Well, the good news is that, like the mini-Leon exterior styling, the interior feels more like the class above. Highlights include the large infotainment system in the centre console.

The wheelbase of the new Ibiza is 95mm longer, which equals more rear legroom and a boot with 355 litres – a massive 63 litres more than before.

A choice of three engines will be slotted under the bonnet: a 1.0-litre TSi petrol with 94 or 113bhp outputs and a 1.6-litre TDi diesel with 94 or 113bhp.

Expect the new Ibiza to hit UK shores by early summer.
