TELEMATICS are key is the message as RS Connect wins RAC contract to fit on-board diagnostics devices to vans for Volkswagen Financial Services (VWFS).

The RAC’s on-board diagnostics (OBD) devices are for predictive servicing and repair.

Through the contract with the RAC – telematics partner for VWFS for nearly two years – Volkswagen Group’s finance and insurance services business can gain detailed information of vehicle faults and so deliver greater efficiencies in its service maintenance and repair management.

The contract sees the RAC device installed by RS Connect to VWFS’s commercial vehicle division across 72 of its UK service centres.

RS Connect already installs the OBD device across the RAC’s fleet customer base, and is looking to expand their relationship with the motoring and insurance specialists further by fitting other safety technologies, such as dashboard camera systems, in 2016.

RAC specialist sales manager Nathan Buxton said: “The new deal highlights a powerful partnership that underpins the key role telematics technology is now playing and will continue to play in the future of fleet management.

“Partnerships with trusted businesses such as RS Connect are important to us as we rely on them to deliver our brand to Volkswagen Financial Services, and ultimately the end user of their vehicles.”

Lea Hodson, managing director at RS Connect, added: “We are thrilled to be working with the RAC and fitting their OBD devices.

“The use of telematics has grown rapidly across commercial fleet markets and our expertise in this area, alongside private insurance, has helped to spearhead our recent growth.  To secure a contract with the  RAC sends out a strong signal to our competitors of our expertise and competence in the telematics industry.”

The UK telematics industry continues to grow as insurance companies offer the devices alongside reduced premiums.

Fleet managers are benefitting from black box devices as they provide real time data on driver behaviour, together with mileage verification and, with an OBD device, predictive servicing and repair information.

RS Connect currently works with leading telematics insurers including TescoBank, Insure the box, RSA and the RAC, as well as fleet management companies, installing solutions for large fleets like Amazon and British Gas.
