Renault is now offering a full purchase battery option on its electric models including the Renault Zoe above and the Renault Kangoo ZE van below

RENAULT is up for change.

While it’s not abandoning its electric vehicle policy of vehicle plus leased battery (a bit like selling a car without an engine that you then have to lease), it has listened to the market.

And the market – primarily the residual value setters, large fleets and contract hire and leasing companies – wanted an all inclusive option.

So, chapeaux off to Renault, that’s exactly what they’ve done with a full purchase battery option now available on Zoe and the Kangoo Van ZE – winner of our Best Green Van award – called Zoe i and Kangoo Van ZE i.

And in case you’re wondering the ‘i’ stands for inclusive. As in inclusive battery.

The badging will be applied to the tailgate and  the vehicle documents (including the V5C) so used buyers will be able to clearly identify what they are buying.

Ken Ramirez, managing director of Renault said: “Residual value setter CAP says its very positive and it’s important to have visual recognition that the vehicle is different.

“We expect residual values to go up but we haven’t heard their figures yet. It was also something the contract hire companies were very keen to see.”

Ken went on to explain: “Renault was a pioneer in the EV market and has remained a leader by offering the best technology, across a wide Z.E. line-up and at affordable prices.

“The battery leasing scheme has proved popular with customers for the flexibility and lower purchase prices it offers.

“The addition of full purchase versions on our core EV models will offer private and business customers a greater choice and further strengthen our position in the UK EV market.”

There is a cost implication, of course.

Renault says the ZOE i is available from £18,443 ‘on-the-road’, after the Government’s Plug-in Car Grant, compared to £13,995 on a battery lease version.

The Kangoo Van i range starts at £16,161 (+VAT) after the Government grant, compared to £12,995 (+VAT) if the battery is leased.

The full purchase ‘i’ models are protected by a five-year, 60,000-mile warranty on the batteries in addition to the standard Renault vehicle protection of four years / 100,000 miles.

Under the battery hire scheme the battery is protected for life, or if it falls below 75% of original capacity.

Ken Ramirez added: “The new inclusive i option will open the door to more fleet customers so it will be incremental business.”
