GETTING the best of both worlds can be much more elusive in reality than it is on paper. The new Renault Captur dCi 90 EDC may be one of those examples that actually delivers.

This isn’t a new car – the updated Captur was introduced in May – but it is a new combination.

From today Renault is offering the Captur with the combination of fuel efficient dCi 90 Diesel engine and six-speed Efficient Dual Clutch (EDC) automatic gearbox. The claim is that this will provide company car drivers with the efficiency of a manual and the comfort of an automatic.

Obviously they aren’t just offering company car drivers this option, but hopefully you get our point.

The 1.5-litre dCi 90 is at the more efficient end of the Renault Captur range with solid efficiency figures of around 72mpg and 101g/km in the base level Dynamique Nav trim. It is also available in three other trim levels; Dynamique S Nav, Signature X Nav, and Signature S Nav.

With a 0-60mph time of 13 seconds and a top speed of 107mph, the dCi 90 won’t offer the most blistering performance but it’s 90bhp will be enough for most driving situations. To compensate it does offer the aforementioned efficiency and a BIK rate of 22% that should appeal to many company car drivers.

The EDC transmission has been optimised for day-to-day use, offering smooth changes that are fast enough to respond instantly to driver demands. Anyone who spends a reasonable amount of time on the road will appreciate the combination of the relaxed driving of an automatic with the instant response and economy of a manual. The EDC automatic is also an option with the more powerful TCe 120 engine.

The Renault Captur is one of the best selling compact crossovers in Europe and the updated version doesn’t look like relinquishing that position. If you opt for the Dynamique Nav trim you can expect a high specification at includes climate control, LED running lights, and cruise control, not to mention the SatNav explicit in the name. If the other updated models are any indication then this one will prove equally well designed and well finished.

The new Renault Captur dCi 90 EDC is available to order now with prices for the entry level Dynamique Nav starting from just £20,125. The range topping Signature S Nav starts from £24,005.
