What is it?

THE most desirable car of 2011 – without a doubt. New Evoque is the long-awaited baby Range Rover, a car that brings the luxurious badge into the reach of ordinary small business owners and business car drivers. Just. And this is no gas guzzler; it’s the smallest, most efficient and cleanest Range Rover yet and it’s available in front-wheel drive as well as four-wheel drive too. On sale September, it comes in three-door Coupe form as well as a five-door too. Prices start at £27,995.

What’s hot?

  • Those concept car looks. Evoque is just as stunning as original LRX
  • Entry-level front-drive 148bhp 2.2 diesel does 50mpg and 130g/km CO2
  • Great fun to drive with sharp steering and real agility
  • The driving position is superb: sporty yet lofty
  • Our 238bhp 2.0-litre turbo petrol test car did 0-60mph in seven seconds…
  • …with a broad spread of overtaking torque. Quiet on the motorway too
  • Six-speed automatic is slick and has steering wheel paddles
  • All cars get adaptive dampers so ride is firm but compliant
  • Cabin is beautifully laid out with options such as a dual-view TV
  • Panoramic glass sunroof makes it a really airy place to be
  • Still a proper off-roader with Hill Descent Control and Terrain Response…
  • …which gives you a variety of different traction settings
  • Decent space in the back for tall adults

What’s not?

  • You’ll have to wait until next year for that tax-busting 2WD diesel
  • But demand is so strong, you might have to wait that long for any car!
  • Rear seats can feel a little claustrophobic
  • Most buyers will be spending at least £35,000 with a few options
  • Petrol turbo is thirsty, don’t expect much more than 25mpg

Business Car Manager Road Test Rating

Few cars have been as hyped as much as the Evoque – but the wait has been worth it. This is an incredibly desirable car that’s every inch the Range Rover, despite being only a little bit longer than a Golf. It’s fun to drive, beautiful to look at and extremely capable off-road. While many models in the line-up will be out of the reach of most people – our test car cost an eye-watering £45,000 with some options – the entry-level eD4 two-wheel drive diesel actually presents a solid business case for many company car drivers. It’s a winner.
