Peugeot 3008 1.6 BlueHDi 120 Allure Auto S&S

WHEN the 3008 first came to our shores in 2008 one of its least charming aspects was a pug-ugly front grille. Thankfully, that’s long gone and the Peugeot remains a firm favourite with the crossover/MPV brigade who see the Peugeot 3008 spanning the two classes offering a high-wide-and-handsome driving position with people carrier-like internal flexibility for luggage and passengers.

What is it?

Possibly the final generation of this car, the range offered in the UK has been slimmed down to just three engine options, a petrol three cylinder 1.2-litre, the 1.6-litre BlueHDi and a 2.0-litre BlueHDi. There are also just two levels of trim, the Active and the range-topping Allure that we tested.

Inside there’s plenty of legroom and with one-touch operation on the 60:40 rear seats, there are many storage possibilities.

What’s hot?

  • The 1.6-litre BlueHDi is smooth and very quiet inside the car and, despite a pedestrian 0-62mph sprint time of 12.4secs, it provides enough power to cruise fully loaded at speed.
  • A BIK rating of just 20% is based a claimed C02 emission of 112g/km and 65.7mpg average fuel economy.
  • Handling is surprisingly sprightly for such a large bus although expect a bit of body roll in very aggressive cornering.
  • Technology on the Allure include DAB digital radio, sat-nav with traffic alerts, Bluetooth connectivity, AUX and USB connections. A particularly beneficial aspect is that the navigation software and Bluetooth is updateable for five years for no charge.
  • Interior space, especially headroom, is more than ample and the optional full length panoramic roof-window creates a bright airy environment for all the passengers.
  • Boot space is generous, too, ranging from 512 litres to 1,604 litres with the rear seats folded.

What’s not?

  • Real world fuel economy is a good 20mpg down on the manufacturer’s combined cycle claim and, on the 1,600 mile road test I submitted the car to, an average reading of 42mpg is all I could manage.
  • The six-speed EAT6 automatic gearbox was a bit slow to react and often held low gears too long lending an unnecessarily frantic feel to the drive.
  • The technology’s software felt in need of an update on our test car because it was slow to connect to phones, sometimes losing a pre-paired link and being completely unable to access media files through Bluetooth with an iPhone 6, requiring the use of the USB cable instead.
  • One of the taller drivers on the test complained of an inability to get the driving position right for them although us smaller beasts did not notice this.
  • The use of four stalks behind the steering wheel, operating lights/indicators, windscreen wipers, cruise/speed limiter and then the system volume/information, all seems a bit archaic in these days of multi-function steering wheels.

Business Car Manager Road Test Verdict

The 3008 still makes a strong argument to be on the shopping list of business drivers who need space and ease of use for both work and play.

Just because it feels like it’s coming to the end of its production life, it doesn’t mean you won’t find this a dependable workhorse for at least the next five years as long as you keep on top of the software updates!
