Read on for some helpful tips for driving through a new city.

Choose your travel times carefully

Completing a little research before you hit the road is an essential tip. It’s always best to be aware of congested areas, one way systems and getting familiar with rush hour and the busiest times of the day.

Simply put, the less traffic you have to deal with, the better. You’ll be able to take your time, not feel pressured to make quick decisions and you’ll have more chance of catching important road signs and driver information as you drive around. Do a little research and you’ll already feel confident behind the wheel.

Give yourself more time and then double it

If you have to be somewhere for a specific time, then you need to give yourself more time to get there and then factor in the possibility of getting lost, getting stuck in traffic, taking the wrong turn and even having difficulty finding somewhere to park.

The more time you have the more relaxed you’ll be whilst driving; the last thing you want is the added stress of time running out.

And if you do arrive much earlier than expected, it gives you chance to find where you need to be, grab something to eat and get to know your surroundings a little better.

Remove distractions

You’ll need to concentrate and be alert whilst you’re in this new area. So turn off music and any other distracting factors.

Ask you passengers to turn off or mute their devices so they don’t distract you too much. Stop all conversations and ask younger passengers if they can be as quiet as they can for a few moments whilst you get your bearings.

Be willing to go round in circles

We’ve all been there when the GPS has told us where we need to be and yet we’ve ended up in the wrong lane or taken the wrong turning or missed an exit. It’s frustrating but try not to cut back in or risk making the situation worse, instead be willing to circle back and approach again.

It might take time, but as long as you’ve given yourself enough time to get to your destination and factored in the possibility of errors you should (eventually) get there in one piece!
