THIS is a bit frustrating: we now know a few more details about the forthcoming compact Volvo XC40 SUV – but we still don’t know what the final car will look like.
Hmm…
Above is the XC40 Concept – which looks pretty appealing to us – but the final car you order might look rather different.
That’s because Volvo says the XC40 will be available with dozens of possible exterior and interior colour combinations that, it says here, places the driver at the centre of attention.
It will re-write the rulebook for the small premium SUV sector Volvo reckons.
Thomas Ingenlath, chief design officer at Volvo Cars, said:
“We wanted the XC40 to be a fresh, creative and distinctive member of the Volvo line-up, allowing its drivers to put their personality in their driveway. XC40 drivers are interested in fashion, design and popular culture, and often live in large, vibrant cities. They want a car that reflects their personality. The XC40 is that car.”
Possibly. But could we end up with more of a dog’s dinner than a fine dining experience?

The new XC40 will feature a wide selection of potential colour combinations. These range from a solid, monochromatic theme, to dual compositions in vivid colours. Volvo says the latter “lends themselves to self-expression”.
On the inside, new interior colour choices in the XC40 include a warm Lava Orange carpet, an Oxide Red upholstery and a range of new and distinctive trims and materials with designs inspired by urban architecture and cartography.
Natural, felt-based carpets, headliners and door inserts will deliver a modern touch.
So there you go.
If that doesn’t sound quite like you, Volvo is hedging its bets on the new XC40. There are to be three trims in the new XC40 range:
- Momentum
- R-Design
- Inscription
It appears Momentum will be the fashion-oriented model in the range while R-Design and Inscription trims will “reflect a more dynamic and premium feel”.
So we think we know which models the company car drivers of the UK will be choosing then…
