Mercedes E-Class top 5 tech highlights
The Mercedes E-Class is the German manufacturer’s most successful model ever. At the Detroit Motor Show in January the wraps will come off the all-new fifth-generation car, the new Mercedes E-Class which will compete against the BMW 5 Series and Audi A6 in the company car car park.
We may be some weeks away from the official unveiling but engineers and designers have spent the past four years developing and honing the new E-Class with the aiming of making it the most advanced Mercedes ever produced.
Here we give you the lowdown on all of the tech that will be at your fingertips when you get behind the wheel as we run through the top 5 highlights.
- Remote Parking Pilot
The E-Class will become the first car in its sector to be fitted with semi autonomous technology. The remote parking feature, as the name suggests, will allow the driver to remotely park their car in tight or narrow spaces. Using a smartphone based app, the driver will be able to guide the E-Class into and out of a parking space and start and stop the engine. For safety the system only works at speeds up to 2mph.
- Headlights
Every car has them but the new E-Class will ditch the old 24-bulb headlamps used on the current model for a pair hi-res LED headlamps fitted with 84 high-res individual LED bulbs.
- Intelligent Drive tech
Guiding itself in and out of parking spaces won’t be the only autonomous feature on the new E-Class. Mercedes Intelligent Drive technology will allow the E-Class to drive itself along stretches of motorway without any direct driver input, following corners and maintaining a safe distance from the car in front. The E-Class uses a raft of radars, cameras and sensors to create a digital picture of its surroundings.
- Car-to-car communication
Safety will also play a huge role on the new E-Class. Car-to-X communication, as its known, enables cars fitted with the technology to communicate with one another about road incidents and potential hazards nearby. If a car has driven past an incident which you are approaching, you will be alerted and warned of what is up ahead.
- Interior
The E-Class has always been more closely aligned with the smaller C-Class, but that will change when the new model arrives next year. A whole new interior will bring the E-Class closer in terms of style, feel and luxury with the flagship S-Class. Two bonded 12.3-inch high-res displays replace the analogue dials from the current model, while eight-way massage seats and a 23-speaker surround sound system have also been added inside.
