Ford Mondeo Estate automatic road test

Ford Mondeo Estate 2.0 TDCi Titanium 163PS Powershift auto

What is it?

NEW range of 2.0-litre diesel engines have been introduced to the Ford Mondeo all delivering 139g/km CO2. There are three power outputs to choose from: 115PS; 140PS; and 163PS. All produce CO2 emissions of 139g/km in manual trim and economy of 53.2mpg. The model tested is the 163PS model with Powershift automatic.

What’s hot?

  • Gutsy engine has plenty of mid-range surge
  • Powershift auto provides silky-smooth changes
  • Auto has three settings: auto, sport and manual
  • Easy to set up Bluetooth phone connection…
  • …via easy-to-use colour touchscreen sat-nav
  • Effortless cruiser on the motorways
  • It might have a Ford badge but Mondeo estate looks upmarket
  • Flat load bay can be extended by folding rear seats
  • Good 139g/km CO2 figures mean low company car tax

What’s not?

  • Engine gets too noisy as revs rise…
  • …so make more use of the torque and avoid it
  • Steering occasionally has artificially heavy feel
  • Suspension nicely supple most of the time…
  • …but occasionally thumps over larger ridges
  • Desirable options can bump up price
