Ford Focus 1.6 TDCi ECOnetic DPF Start Stop 5dr

What is it?

LATEST and most business-friendly version of Ford’s super-green Focus model. In addition to a slippery bodykit, this ECOnetic gets a new 1.6-litre TDCI engine, Ford’s first start-stop system, longer gearing, a clever alternator which recharges the battery with energy from the brakes and a neat fuel-saving gadget on the dash. Available in 90PS and 109PS form, but you can only have start-stop on the latter, which is priced at £20,455 on the road.

What’s hot?

  • All those tweaks mean 74.2mpg and CO2 emissions of 99g/km…
  • …so most drivers will only fill up 11 times a year…
  • …pay no road tax and pay 13% BIK

  • …smoothly restarting when you select first gear
  • Diesel unit has more than enough pace for most drivers
  • Neat display on the dash rates your…
  • …driving on anticipation, speed and gearchanges…
  • …plus there’s an optimum gear-change point indicator too
  • Michelin low rolling resistance tyres offer a compliant ride
  • Driving experience is sharp, agile and great fun
  • 100% first year writing down allowance

What’s not?

  • At nearly £20,000 it’s hugely expensive…
  • …almost £2,000 more than a VW Golf Bluemotion
  • Which will, of course, impact on the P11D price
  • Cabin and styling starting to feel its age
  • Eco tyres don’t offer as much grip as normal rubber

Business Car Manager Road Test Rating

These updates bring some amazing headline figures – and there’s no doubt that this latest Focus ECOnetic will be staggeringly cheap to run. Plus it’s still just as good to drive as ever. But the high price tag will put many business car managers off, and will leave many company car drivers paying more tax than they should do. A Golf Bluemotion makes more sense.
