SO this is the all-new BMW X5: all gaping air intakes, big bright chrome kidney grille design, and a bigger, more muscular appearance.

The upmarket SUV goes into its fourth generation and will build on the 2.2 million X5s sold already since the big 4×4 came onto the scene in 1999.

The BMW X5 goes on sale this June. Prices start from £56,710 and rise to £70,690.

The all-new BMW X5 has even more presence than before – and if X5 generation 3 was tight getting into your parking space then be prepared for more of a squeeze.

The wheelbase is 42mm longer, increasing vehicle length by 36mm; there’s an extra 66mm in the width of the newcomer; and a 19mm increase in height.

If parking will get tighter, there’s more room to relax inside as a result with greater passenger space. And more room for luggage.

Two model choices

There are two distinctive model lines in the all-new BMW X5 range: xLine and M Sport

The xLine model features:

  • kidney grille bars in aluminium matt,
  • roof rails and side window surrounds in satin Aluminium,
  • plus other accents in Pearl-effect Chrome.

M Sport specification features:

  • body colour wheelarch trim, bumper trim, rear underguard and side skirts
  • extra-large air intakes at the front end,
  • aluminium matt kidney grille bars
  • roof rails, side window surrounds and other trim elements in high-gloss black

Standard spec alloys are 19-inch on the xLine model; 20-inch M star-spoke light-alloy wheels on the M Sport; and 22-inch V-spoke alloy wheels on the M Performance model.

Optional allow wheels are in 20 to 22-inch formats.

Two diesel and one petrol engine

First BMW X5 models from June will come with a choice of two diesel or one petrol engine. Transmission is a new eight-speed Steptronic gearbox with the latest xDrive four-wheel drive traction.

The BMW X5 xDrive30d looks the ideal choice for business motoring.

Powered by a straight-six 3.0-litre turbo diesel engine, there’s 265hp power on offer but a massive 620Nm of torque. O-62mph takes 6.5 seconds.

Fuel consumption is 47.1mpg; CO2 emissions are 158g/km, which puts the X5 xDrive30d in the 36% company car tax band.

The higher power xDrive50d also has a straight-six 3.0-litre turbo diesel engine, but rather than one turbo, the 50d makes do with four…

There is a simply whopping 760Nm of torque available…Say goodbye to 0-62mph in 5.2 seconds.

The new BMW X5 M50d has a combined fuel consumption of 41.5mpg and CO2 emissions of 179g/km.

The petrol unit fitted in the new BMW X5 xDrive40i is a straight-six 3.0-litre unit with twin-scroll turbocharger and direct petrol injection technology. Maximum output is 340hp, peak torque is 450Nm. The new BMW X5 xDrive40i completes the zero to 62mph sprint in just 5.5 seconds. Fuel consumption is 33.2mpg; CO2 emissions are 193g/km.

All model variants comply with the requirements of the latest EU6d-TEMP emissions standard.

Off-road, sport or comfort – take your pick

There is a choice chassis systems for the new X5 depending on your driving preference: off-road performance, sportiness or comfort with standard air suspension.

Adaptive M suspension Professional does the sport bit; an Off-Road package, available for the first time in a BMW X model, includes underguard elements at the front and rear of the vehicle, along with the two-axle air suspension and electronically controlled rear differential lock, does the off the tarmac bit.

Interior and equipment

There’s a new look to the fully-digital instrument cluster and Control Display plus a newly designed transmission selector.

There’s standard Vernasca leather plus electrically adjustable and heated sports seats.

M Sport models also include M sports steering wheel, BMW Individual headliner in Anthracite, M-specific pedals, driver’s footrest and piping on the seats, plus exclusive interior trim strips in Aluminium Tetragon.

There’s also a panoramic glass roof, with a surface 30% larger than the outgoing car.

Keep your drinks cool…or warm

One of the option on the new BMW X5 are thermo-cupholders in the centre console. Drinks can be kept cool or warm.

The new BMW X5 now also offers enhanced functionality. Folding down the 40 : 20 : 40 split rear seat backrest increases boot capacity from 645 litres to a maximum of 1,860 litres.

The new BMW X5 also has a two-section tailgate for ease of loading. An optional Comfort Access enables both sections to be opened and closed automatically and hands-free. In addition the boot cover now lowers electrically into the load compartment floor.

A third row of seats is optional with electric fore-and-aft adjustment. A control panel in the boot can be used to slide the second-row seats forwards or backwards and fold down the backrests of the second and third rows.
