FIRST there was the BMW X6, a sporty SUV alternative to the X5 – now there’s the X4, a smaller sister to the X6 for buyers who might think the X3 a bit too staid.
The company car favourite will return up to 54.3mpg
According to BMW, that makes it the first Sports Activity Coupe in the premium mid-sized segment.
The X4’s appearance is clearly influenced by the design of the larger X6, but under the skin it borrows heavily from the X3.
The starting line-up will offer three EU-6-compliant diesel engine options. All X4s will have a sporty suspension set-up and BMW’s intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive system as standard.
The entry-level choice, which is likely to be of most interest to company car drivers, is a 2.0-litre diesel with an all-aluminium construction, which develops 190PS and peak torque of 400Nm, good enough to get the X4 xDrive20d to 62 mph in 8.0 seconds.
A six-speed manual gearbox is standard, but there’s the option of an eight-speed automatic that brings fuel consumption down to 54.3mpg and CO2 emission to 138g/km.
