MG3: Plans to build car for Europe in Longbridge from next year

It’s been a long time coming, but it looks like the MG3 Supermini will go into production at Longbridge from 2013.

MG Motor UK, the West Midlands-based automotive manufacturer of parent company, SAIC Motor, has announced plans to build the car for Europe where it already assembles the MG6.

The global car manufacturer already bases its European design and technical centre at its Birmingham site and will inject further capital to create state-of-the-art R&D facilities as part of a worldwide £4.5 billion investment programme.

The MG brand has a long and prestigious history and has seen sales in global markets, particularly China, sharply rise.

MG3 sales have already begun in China after the car was show in 2010. The majority of engineering and design work for the global manufacturer takes place in the UK, benefiting from world-class engineering capability and expertise.

As momentum grows for the MG brand, it plans to introduce vehicles in additional markets, including Egypt and Uruguay.

Engineers and designers at the MG Birmingham site had a major input in the styling, design and engineering development of the new MG3 car that went on sale in China in 2011.

It was unveiled at the 2010 Guangzhou Motor Show in China and takes many styling cues from the MG ZERO concept car – again designed by the team at the MG Birmingham site – which was shown for the first time in Europe at two major UK motor shows in November 2010.

Fleet and business drivers have always appreciated the brand and the new MG3 could do well, so keep up with its progress in our business car news section or company car news pages.
