THERE is no end to the number of SUVs on the market. Which is great for customer choice. But also brings its own snags.

Like which one should I chose?

Which brand is best for leasing?

And so on.

So, here’s one SUV for you to consider for your business motoring: the Mercedes GLC.

10 reasons to consider the Mercedes GLC for business motoring

1 The GLC is the mid-size SUV from Mercedes and sits between the more compact GLA and the larger GLE. And no prizes for suspecting it’s based on the C-Class. Well done if you got there before us.

The Mercedes GLC has typical rivals such as the Audi Q5, BMW X3, and Volvo XC60 for typical business motoring choices. So that gives you and idea of where the GLC sits in the scale of SUV things and the sort of rivals to look at if you are going to lease a GLC.

The Mercedes GLC starts with the GLC 220 d 4MATIC Sport 9-speed G-Tronic at a current list price of £38,865 and goes all the way up to the mad, bad GLC 63 S Edition 1 4MATIC AMG Plus 9-speed Speedshift MCT model at a cool £91,284. Try saying that model name quickly – it will get to 62mph faster! (3.8 secs for the record…)

There are two diesel engines that will interest most business motoring drivers considering leasing the GLC, the 172PS 220 D, and the higher powered 204PS 250 D model with a really useful 500Nm of torque that will deliver you punchy overtaking performance.

These 2.1-litre engines are slightly long in the tooth – a newer 2.0-litre diesel features in the C-Class – but the transmission is all auto with a deliciously smooth nine-speed unit swishing through the gears ensures forward momentum is accomplished. Both deliver 56.5mpg and emit 132g/km of CO2.

Company car benefit in kind taxation starts from the 30% tax banding for both the 220 D and 250 D models. Benefit in kind taxation for the 2018/19 tax year starts from £193 (20%) per month and £386 per month at 40%. You can work out the company car tax on the Mercedes GLC model you are interested in leasing or purchasing by visiting our company car tax calculator.

The alternative GLC leasing option to the 220 D and 250 D GLC is the petrol model 250 4MATIC. This develops 214PS and 350 Nm of torque, averages 43.5 mpg and emits 155 g/km of CO2. This puts the petrol model in the 31% company car tax band for 2018/19. Benefit in kind company car tax starts from £250 per month (20%) and £401 (40%).

There are two standard model lines for you to choose from: Sport and AMG Line. Whichever you chose, each is well equipped. Standard equipment includes Garmin Map Pilot navigation system; Active Park Assist; Artico upholstery in black or beige; keyless start; reversing camera; LED performance head lights; heated front seats; sports suspension; electrically operated tail gate with foot activation; and mirror package (consisting of electrically operated and automatically dimming mirrors)

What’s different on the GLC Sport model then? Good question. With the GLC Sport model you get a black ash wood interior trim, 18-inch five-spoke alloy wheels and a diamond grille with black-painted pins

10 And on the GLC AMG Line? Glad you asked…AMG sports steering wheel with flat bottom; brushed steel sports pedals; black roof lining; and Artico leather in either black or cranberry red. The exterior features: an AMG bodystyling kit; 19-inch five-twin-spoke alloy wheels; and a diamond grille with chrome pins

Mercedes GLC summary

The Mercedes GLC offers elegant SUV driving behind the three-pointed star. As you might expect, the GLC is less sports oriented than its rivals from say Audi or BMW. Having said that, you can specify a sportier looking GLC Coupe, but it’s the styling rather than the way it drives that is different.

That sense of luxury rather than sporty driving is further enhanced by the electric opening tailgate – just waft your foot below the bumper and it will open automatically. Boot size is 550 litres. This can be doubled by folding down the rear seats – again by electric release.

You can specify a number of enhancements over the well-specified standard models. The ones to look out for on the GLC are: Premium package (£1,695) – ambient lighting; sliding glass sunroof (which will automatically move to the raised position if it detects rain); Keyless-Go comfort package; and memory package.

To this, Premium Plus (£2,995) package adds COMAND Online infotainment system and Burmester surround sound system (consisting of 13 speakers).

The 220 D version is the one we would pick as the best for business motoring use, whether you are leasing a GLC or buying a GLC. For that you’ll get a premium SUV with plenty of luxury, the Mercedes nameplate, and effortless motorway miles.
