Great looks, class leading emissions and company car costs, plus it’s a terrific drive.

What is it?

The Mazda6 was traditionally a kind of outside choice for the business car buyer that was weighing up the usual Passat vs. Mondeo vs. Insignia debate but this all-new generation shouldn’t be the outside choice any longer.

Firstly, just look at it – even our estate Tourer version looks fantastic. But more than that, Mazda is actually promising class-leading emissions and a driving experience that’s as exciting as its looks.

Mazda6 estate
The rear of the saloon is almost Jag-like – and the estate looks pretty good too. Performance is impressive and refined

What’s hot?

  • We’re driving the flagship 2.2-litre diesel engine with 175PS. It’s a great performer, with 0-62mph taking just 7.9 seconds and with really impressive refinement, too. It knocks over a second off the 150PS variant we reviewed in saloon form.
  • This isn’t the most economical engine in the range but it still manages 61.4mpg and CO2 emissions of just 121g/km. For the ultimate company car we recommend the lower-powered 150PS variant which returns over 67mpg.

Inside it’s stylish, simple and well-equipped. Doesn’t quite win on the quality stakes though
  • Go for the 2.2 SE-L model and benefit in kind company car tax is just 17%, resulting in around £800 worth of tax for low rate payers. That’s better than a comparable Passat or Mondeo.
  • And the Mazda is great to drive, too. It has a gearshift that feels straight out of the MX-5 sports car, with nice direct steering and plenty of grip. For out-and-out driving thrills it’s a close call between the Mazda6 and the Mondeo.
  • You won’t find a more stylish car in this class. The Insignia comes close but the Mazda6’s sharp lines are guaranteed to turn more heads than most.
  • The interior is good, too, with a stylish simple-to-use layout. The Passat can still claim to have the highest-quality interior, though.

What’s not?

Mazda6
Not as big as some, but still plenty of space in the estate boot
  • If you are after outright space then the 6 isn’t the most practical choice. The Mondeo Estate’s 1740-litre boot is larger than the Mazda6’s 1648-litre load area.
  • The ride is far from uncomfortable but it is definitely firmer than the Passat. Refinement isn’t quite as good, either, so if you’re after a long distance cruiser there are better options.
  • The Mazda6 has been designed from the ground up to be lightweight, and as a result the doors can feel – and sound – a little flimsy.

If you’re getting a company car in this sector, don’t ignore it

Business Car Manager Verdict

The Mazda6 Tourer is no longer just an outsider in the executive segment. Its sharp looks are enough to draw you to it, and once you get behind the wheel you’ll be even more impressed.

Take one look at the figures in a business car comparison and you’ll find pretty much every engine in the range has class-leading fuel economy and emissions figures, which definitely helps to cement the Mazda6’s case as one of the best company car options on the road.
