Jaguar XF 2.2 diesel business car road test report

Jaguar XF 2.2 Diesel

Jaguar XF 2.2 Diesel

What is it?

FINALLY a Jaguar that makes sense for business drivers. New entry-level Jaguar XF gets a 188bhp 2.2-litre four-cylinder diesel, slashing running costs dramatically and giving company car drivers a real reason to choose the Jaguar brand over an Audi A6 2.0 TDI or a BMW 520d. The new engine, which is a development of a Ford/PSA Peugeot-Citroen unit and is shared with the new Range Rover Evoque, comes with a new eight-speed automatic gearbox and stop-start fuel-saving technology. On sale later this month with first deliveries in September, it’ll be combined with a facelift for the entire XF range, revised cabin and re-tuned suspension. We drove a prototype model to see how it’s shaping up.

What’s hot?

  • The fact that it returns 52.3mpg combined, emits 149g/km…
  • …and has a theoretical range of around 800 miles between fill ups
  • By comparison the V6 diesel XF posts 42mpg and 179g/km respectively
  • A 22% benefit in kind company car tax band makes it business-friendly
  • While road tax will cost £130 a year
  • Compared to the Mondeo engine, this version is considerably different…
  • …with a water cooled turbo and low-friction pistons
  • Active engine mounts and twin-layer bulkhead make it very quiet…
  • …from start-up or under acceleration; it’s always gruff but smooth
  • 450Nm of torque available from 2,000rpm makes for easy overtaking…
  • …and it’s rapid off the line with 0-62mph in 8.5seconds
  • Overall you just don’t feel short-changed compared to the V6 version
  • Eight-speed auto shuffles gears so smoothly you barely notice changes
  • Long top gear results in hushed motorway cruising
  • Stop-start shuts the engine down very quickly when you come to a halt…
  • …starting up again incredibly quickly
  • Should cost from less than £30,000

What’s not?

  • Those fuel consumption/CO2 figures are good but a BMW 520d returns…
  • …54.3mpg and emits 137g/km for 20% benefit in kind company car tax
  • There’s a bit of a shudder when the engine starts up again
  • The fact it’s taken Jaguar so long to get it on the road!
  • Order now and you’ll have to wait until September for delivery

Business Car Manager Road Test Rating

Jaguar reckons that this new 2.2-litre diesel engine will account for 60% of XF sales – and on the basis of this prototype drive, we reckon that’s something of an underestimate. This is the car that the Coventry firm should have had on sale from the XF’s launch back in 2008.

Nevertheless, this is now the clear choice for small business owners, SME company directors and business car drivers who always wanted a Jag but couldn’t make the financial case stack up. The even better news is that it doesn’t feel like an entry-level engine – it’s got more than enough pace, and together with a facelift and some updates for the interior and the suspension, will make the 2012 model year Jaguar XF a very desirable business car indeed.

Now all the firm needs to do is get the XF Estate on sale and start work on a BMW 3 Series rivalling replacement for the X-Type.
