Insurance cover for winter driving accidents

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has said that accidents caused by snow or ice will be covered under comprehensive motor insurance policies.

However, the ABI said the cost of breakdowns or vehicles that fail to start is not covered. For assistance, the ABI said motorists should contact their breakdown or roadside assistance provider.

Nick Starling, director of general insurance and health, ABI commented:

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has said that accidents caused by snow or ice will be covered under comprehensive motor insurance policies.

However, the ABI said the cost of breakdowns or vehicles that fail to start is not covered. For assistance, the ABI said motorists should contact their breakdown or roadside assistance provider.

Nick Starling, director of general insurance and health, ABI commented: “Severe weather conditions cause great disruption and inconvenience. And insurance is there to help soften the blow.

“People who have suffered damage to their vehicle due to the weather should contact their insurance company for advice.”

Meanwhile, the Highways Agency was advising drivers to check weather and driving conditions before setting out on journeys. And to make sure they were properly prepared for the conditions.

Highways Agency advice to drivers for winter driving includes:

    • Before you set out, check local and national weather forecasts. Listen to travel bulletins on the radio. Be equipped with warm clothes, food, water, boots, a torch and spade.
    • Up-to-date information on road conditions on England’s motorways and trunk roads is available at www.highways.gov.uk/trafficinfo; for weather conditions, visit the Met Office www.metoffice.gov.uk
    • It can take 10 times longer to stop in icy conditions. Keep your distance. Allow extra room to slow down and stop. Slow down and avoid making any sharp driving movements.
    • If the weather becomes severe, don’t drive unless you have to – delay your journey until it improves.
