The new BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer: seven-seater compact MPV aimed at rivals such as the Vauxhall Zafira Tourer

The new BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer

  • BMW has announced details of its new seven-seater MPV the 2-Series Gran Tourer which will make its debut at next month’s Geneva Motor Show.
  • The 2-Series GT is effectively a longer version of the 2-Series Active Tourer with a unique selling point of having an extra row of seats. It is the second BMW model to be built on the UKL platform and is as a result the second front-wheel drive vehicle to carry a BMW badge.
  • The inexorable rise of BMW’s sales volumes forecast may indicate otherwise but there are growing voices, including internal ones, questioning whether the constant range expansion of the premium OEMs will continue to reap rewards or whether some kind of consolidation is required. The 2-Series GT is likely to be a key test of this strategy.

Tim UrquhartBMW has announced the latest model in its rapid programme of range expansion which has led to the brand constantly moving into new segments in recent years in the form of the 2 Series Gran Tourer, writes Tim Urquhart (left).

The model is a seven-seater MPV that is based on the same UKL1 platform that is used on the 2 Series Active Tourer, and features styling similar to the Active Tourer, with an extended rear section required to accommodate the extra row of seats.

It will initially be available with a mixture of BMW’s new three-cylinder and four-cylinder modular powertrains in petrol and diesel formats, with power outputs ranging from 116 bhp to 192 bhp, fuel consumption of 44.1–72.4 mpg and CO2 emissions from 149–104 g/km.

The top-of-the-range variant will be the BMW 220d xDrive Gran Tourer, which will be available with all-wheel drive from initial launch.

The new new BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer will be classed as an MPV-C due to its compact dimensions:

  • 4,556 mm long
  • 1,800 mm wide
  • 1,608 mm high.

The BMW2 Series GT offers practicality and utility with a luggage space that can be extended from 645 to 805 litres. With the rear seats folded down, this rises to 1,905 litres of load space.
