Hyundai Santa Fe road test report

Hyundai Santa Fe 2.2 CRTD Premium 5str

Hyundai Santa Fe 2.2 CRTD Premium 5str

What is it?

HEAVILY updated version of Hyundai’s excellent large SUV. New Santa Fe gets a facelift with fresh lights all round and an updated grille, more upmarket cabin and a more powerful 2.2-litre turbodiesel engine. Priced from £21,495.

What’s hot?

  • The engine. With 194bhp and 437Nm of torque it’s rapid…
  • …and faster than Hyundai’s cautious 10.2 second 0-62mph time suggests
  • Super smooth too and linked to a brilliant six-speed auto
  • Alternator switches off when not in use to boost economy to 38.2mpg
  • CO2 emissions not bad for a big SUV at 197g/km
  • Facelift works well: looks assertive without being aggressive
  • Horrible fake wood replaced by neat carbon fibre-effect trim
  • Five seats as standard, seven seat option costs an extra £750…
  • …either way there’s lots of space inside
  • Decent equipment levels with standard iPod integration
  • Plenty of off-road ability too
  • Capable of towing 2,500kg

What’s not?

  • Ride can be jiggly over uneven surfaces
  • Digital displays still look a bit cheap
  • Interior build quality not up to VW or Ford standards
  • Only 10% writing down allowance

Business Car Manager Road Test Rating

If you’re in the market for a large SUV, the Santa Fe should be on your list. It’s an unpretentious 4×4 that ticks all the right boxes with a convincing driving experience both on and off the road. There’s also impressive amounts of space and equipment all topped off by a diesel engine that’s punchy, efficient and economical.
