The new Mondeo maintains Ford’s reputation for top draw dynamics

OK, so what’s it like to drive?

First rate. Ford cars are known for the excellence of their driving dynamics, and this Mondeo maintains that reputation. The steering is pert and handling is poised, but it is not at the expense of ride quality, which is very good with well-judged damping.

Refinement is a strong point of this car, with smooth air flow over a body that is more slippery than the previous generation Mondeo. Mechanical noise is reduced and well suppressed, and there is not too much road rumble permeating upwards from the tyres.

Tell me about the range.

The five-door hatch will be the biggest seller. There is also a four-door saloon, but only as a hybrid. Plus there is an estate with a similar engine range to the hatch.

EcoBoost petrol engines are one-litre, 1.5 and 2.0, with power outputs from 125 to 240 PS. TDCi diesels are 1.6 and 2.0 litres, with varying power outputs from 115 to 180 PS initially, with a 240 PS model coming next year. The Hybrid has 187 PS power output and a CO2 figure of 99 g/km.

Combined fuel economy figures range from 38.7 mpg in the 2.0 TDCi with 180 PS, to 78.5 mpg in the 1.6 TDCi with 115 PS. The two-litre Hybrid does 67.3 mpg combined.
