New Prius 5-star safety

  • First car in Euro NCAP’s newest test of autonomous emergency braking (AEB) technology for pedestrians
  • 3rd successive generation of Prius to achieve top 5-star classification
  • Standard Toyota Safety Sense helps driver avoid an accident, or minimise consequences of collision
  • High-strength steels in the body shell

EURO NCAP has declared the Toyota Prius 5-star first in its newest test of autonomous emergency braking (AEB) technology for pedestrians – and the first of 2016 to come out with a 5-star rating.

The Prius 5-star is a result that should enhance insurance ratings and reduce business costs as well as assist in duty of care compliance.

The independent safety testing organisations says that by including this test as part of the safety rating, Euro NCAP takes the lead world-wide in encouraging advanced crash avoidance technology for all cars.

The latest generation Autonomous Emergency Braking systems are not only able to detect vehicles ahead but also in more challenging situations where pedestrians are at risk of being run over. By braking the car automatically, the system helps to avoid or mitigate a crash.

In the Prius tests, the standard fitted “Toyota Safety Sense” effectively recognised potential crashes with pedestrians and cars and has helped the Prius achieve the first 5 star rating in 2016.

Prius safety systems

Toyota Safety Sense package of active safety features standard on all models includes:

  • Pre-Collision System
  • Adaptive Cruise Control with Full Speed Following function,
  • Lane Departure Alert with steering control,
  • Automatic High Beam
  • Road Sign Assist

OPTIONAL radar-controlled systems include:

  • Blind Spot Monitor
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert

The Suzuki Baleno was also tested and was awarded three stars without the optional Radar Brake Support safety pack, four stars with that AEB system.

The Prius’s result maintains its reputation as one of the safest cars in its class, building on the previous five-star performance of the second and third generation models.

Toyota’s constant improvement of its safety technologies has helped the world’s best-selling full hybrid car comply with Euro NCAP’s more stringent and wider-ranging test criteria. These cover not only how vehicle occupants and pedestrians are protected in real-life accident scenarios, but also the quality and range of safety equipment provided.

The new Prius achieved an excellent 92% score for overall adult occupant protection; 82% for child occupants; 77% for pedestrian protection performance; and 85% for safety assist performance.

In its report, Euro NCAP commended the new Prius for maximum point scores achieved in its side barrier impact test, with “good protection of all critical body areas” and a further maximum score for the performance of its autonomous emergency braking system.

The Pre-Collision System is part of the Toyota Safety Sense package of active safety features, together with Adaptive Cruise Control with Full Speed Following function, Lane Departure Alert with steering control, Automatic High Beam and Road Sign Assist, provided as standard on all new Prius models. Additional radar-controlled systems including a Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross Traffic Alert are also available.

The new Prius’s crash test performance reflects the fundamental strength of its Toyota New Global Architecture-based platform and body, which make good use of strategic reinforcements and use of high-strength steels to absorb and channel impact forces away from the cabin.

Launched earlier this year, the new Prius achieves the greatest advances yet in the fuel and emissions efficiency of Toyota’s full hybrid technology, while delivering a significantly more rewarding and engaging driving experience.
