Volvo V50 DRIVe with Start-Stop

Volvo V50 1.6D DRIVe SE with Start/Stop

Volvo V50 1.6D Sportwagon DRIVe SE with Start/Stop

What is it?

THIS is Volvo’s compact estate car in low emission trim, called DRIVe. However, this 1.6 diesel model goes further by adding start-stop to provide an astonishingly low CO2 figure of 104g/km and fuel consumption of 72.4mpg. Which is all good news as far as company car tax goes with a low 13% tax banding.

What’s hot?

  • Low emissions without the hair shirt
  • Fantastic fuel economy of 72.4mpg
  • Which is supermini territory
  • Like the VED which is only £35
  • Gutsy engine copes well with traffic conditions
  • Low company car tax at 13%
  • Neat design touches: restraining strap and shopping divider in boot
  • Digital radio with old-style ‘wireless’ tuning feature
  • Stylish ‘flat’ alloys gives DRIVe standout
  • 100% first year writing down allowance keeps costs down
  • Stylish ‘floating’ centre console stack
  • Control functions obvious and easy to use

What’s not?

  • Some of plastics too scratchy for upmarket Volvo image
  • Ride is too firm…
  • …and low speed city ride is fidgety
  • Engine makes itself heard at lower speeds
  • And there’s wind noise around the door mirrors

Business Car Manager Road Test Rating

Volvo seems to have really cracked it with the new DRIVe range. Sure, there are some rough edges that shouldn’t be there, but with the V50 you get a compact but stylish estate car yet brilliant economy, low monthly company car tax and low running costs. Which adds up to an excellent car for business.
