ACCORDING to a new report, the elderly mobility vehicle market is set to increase significantly by the year 2024. It’s expected the industry will grow by billions of pounds, and it’s partially down to the baby boomer generation.

As the number of elderly people increases, it’s only logical the need for mobility vehicles will also increase. There’s also the fact that more people than ever before are starting to develop knee disorders which will impact mobility later in life.

Favourable government initiatives helping to boost sector

The cost of modifying a vehicle or investing in a new mobility scooter, can be pretty high. However, government initiatives such as the Motability Scheme, have made it possible for more people to afford to stay on the road.

The Motability scheme for example, helps disabled drivers lease a modified vehicle through their Disability Allowance. A set amount of the mobility part of the allowance is taken each week to cover the cost of leasing a new car, scooter or electric powered wheelchair.

It’s schemes like this which are contributing to the sector’s overall growth.

How care homes could benefit

With the number of elderly expected to rise significantly by the year 2024, care home providers would be better off searching for mobility solutions now. Companies such as Mobility Solutions, offer an extensive range of adaptations including electric powered scooters and wheelchairs.

They may even want to look into becoming a nominee for disabled residents in their care. Usually an appointee is a family member or friend, but a nominee can be a non-related carer who acts on the disabled person’s behalf.

This would be a good option for those who are unable to make the application themselves who don’t have any close family or friends. The carer would be responsible for sorting out the scheme and applying for the electric powered scooter or wheelchair. The disabled resident would then be able to use their new vehicle to retain some of their independence.

Overall, there is a lot of help available to ensure those with disabilities are able to stay mobile. The Motability Scheme is just one example of the financial aid available.

With the number of elderly set to rise in the coming years, now is the best time for care homes to focus on the adaptations they may need.
