THE summer holidays are upon us and thousands of us will be visiting Europe to enjoy a break from the old routine and inevitably these trips often involve driving.
Whether you will be driving your own car (with or without a caravan attached) or a local hire car, there are pitfalls aplenty when taking to the road in a foreign country if you aren’t aware of the laws and rules.
Firstly, in all European countries (with the exception of Malta and Cyprus) they drive on the right. Don’t forget this fundamental difference, it could without doubt, save your life.
Other basics to remember are that you could be asked to produce all of your documents in any country at any given time, so make sure that they are up to date and you have them available.
Check with your insurer before you leave to confirm that you have the required cover in place and take the following with you:
- Full, valid driving licence
- Driving licence paper counterpart (if you have a photocard licence)
- The original vehicle registration document (if taking your own vehicle)
- Vehicle insurance certificate (if taking your own vehicle)
- Travel insurance documents
- International driving permit (when necessary)
