Through its Electric Flex scheme, Fleet Evolution is offering customers a petrol or diesel car ‘in reserve’ to company car drivers who opt for an electric car like the Nissan Leaf but are worried about how to make longer trips

COMPANY car drivers who go electric can now get an extra benefit offering essential peace of mind – a normal car in reserve.

Fleet Evolution, which specialises in salary sacrifice car schemes, is including up to four weeks of normal car use each year in its new Electric Flex scheme focusing on electric vehicles (EVs).

range anxiety is a big concern keeping drivers from switching to EVs

The Midlands-based firm aims to more company drivers into EVs. But while such vehicles offer many benefits in fuel economy and emissions, for some needs, such as long-distance trips, they currently can’t cut it – and ‘range anxiety’ is a big concern keeping drivers from switching to EVs.

So under the Electric Flex scheme drivers will be able to add in use of a petrol or diesel fuelled car to their regular EV, for between one and four weeks per year.  The use of the second car can be taken with minimal notice, and at the customer’s discretion – in a full week block or just for a day at a time.

According to Fleet Evolution director Andrew Leech the lack of range of electric cars remains an issue for drivers choosing a salary sacrifice car.

“Our new scheme means customers can take an electric car safe in the knowledge there is an alternative car available if they need it,” Leech says.

“While electric cars are great for the environment and provision for them is improving, they are simply not practical for long distances.

“With Electric Flex anyone taking an electric car can have peace of mind, so whether it’s for a week-long family holiday or a family emergency, customers can use an alternative car with minimal notice.”

Leech believes the scheme will appeal to customers who would like to be more conscious of their carbon footprint but need a reliable vehicle. They will no longer have to choose between the green appeal of EVs and the range of a traditionally-fuelled car.

Fleet Evolution hopes that the Electric Flex scheme will further increase the firm’s success in improving the eco-credentials of its salary sacrifice customers. The firm reckons  it cut the motoring carbon footprint of its customers by 42 per cent last year, simply by replacing older vehicles with newer models.
