A NEW hydrogen car from Welsh-based manufacturer Riversimple was unveiled at the London Motor Show.

The aerodynamic design – named Rasa – is a two door 2+2 seater with a hydrogen fuel cell. But Rivervale, which sees the Rasa providing mobility as a service, never expects you to own the car: it will only be available on lease, with all maintenance provided by Riversimple.

“We’re looking at 20 car ‘hubs’ organised close to a hydrogen fuel source where customers will lease the cars on a long term basis that includes all maintenance and insurance,” said Tom Beech, a motor technician with Rivervale. “The aim is for a hassle-free experience.”

The new Riversimple hydrogen car has a cruising speed of 60mph and a 300 mile range.

The company is looking to crowdsource £2m of funding to match EU funding to provide a 20 car beta test before the first commercially available cars are launched in 2018.

The Rasa has been designed by former Fiat 500 designer Chris Reitz, and features aerodynamic carbon fibre panels produced in Norfolk; the car is built in mid-Wales.

Other models planned included a larger four-door and a commercial vehicle.
