THE fact that Audi’s latest A4 takes over from last year’s Best Large SME Company Car, the Jaguar XE, in the SME Company Car of the Year Awards 2017, proves that the large company car sector is still in a constant state of evolution.

Bigger, lighter and in Ultra winning form, the latest A4 still comes under the important sub 100g/km emissions barrier, yet although efficiency focused, this Audi is still a surprisingly sporty drive.

Best Large Company Car: The Contenders:

  • Audi A4 Saloon 2.0 TDI ultra Sport 150PS
  • Mercedes E-Class Saloon E 220 d AMG Line 9G-Tronic
  • Vauxhall Insignia Hatch 1.6 CDTi Design 136PS Start/Stop ecoFLEX
  • Jaguar XE 2.0d R-Sport 163PS
  • Range Rover Evoque 2.0L eD4 SE Tech 2WD
  • Hyundai Tucson 1.7 CRDi SE Nav 116PS 2WD ISG
  • Last year’s winner was the Jaguar XE 2.0d R-Sport 163PS.

In the end, this Audi A4 in 150PS 2.0 TDI Ultra Sport trim, beat the Vauxhall Insignia with its quality appeal and its 74.3 mpg combined fuel economy and CO2 emissions of just 99g/km.

Don't leave yourself out of pocket - a guide to what you can claim.

Plus, to go with the sporty drive, the Sport trim includes more dynamic details, such as those tasty 17-inch alloys which increased both driver satisfaction and that all important company car appeal.

What our judges thought:

“The Insignia is head and shoulders above the rest in this category in terms of cost to both driver and employer, but lacks the aspirational appeal at this level of employee.

“The Audi A4 fits that bill very well, with comparatively good BIK and running costs. The Tucson is also a contender on the basis of the ‘less traditional’ company car.”

The key reasons why the A4 won:

Acutely efficiency focused they may be, but the Ultra versions of the Audi A4 demand no compromises in return for BIK rates of as little as 21%. Helped by weight savings of up to 120kg versus the previous A4, obsessive attention to aerodynamics and aero acoustics and an interior majoring as much on technology as comfort, the 150PS TDI Ultra delivers 70mpg potential with the finish of a luxury car from the classes above.

The optimal efficiency of the Ultra configuration can be enjoyed in conjunction with SE, Sport and S line specification levels bringing features such as 17-inch or 18-inch alloy wheels, xenon or LED headlamps, Audi Smartphone and Bluetooth interfaces , MMI navigation via a seven-inch colour monitor and Audi Connect online services.
