BMW X5 M Sport car review: SUV sophistication

Surely this is too much to contemplate as a business car…or is it?

Highly desirable latest version of BMW’s luxury (and rather fast) SUV

BMW X5 xDrive40d M Sport

What is it?

This is BMW’s third generation X5, with 3.0-litre turbodiesel and xDrive all-wheel-drive system on board. As the 40d, it’s good for 313bhp and 166g/km and for the business user, another key figure is a P11D of £55,135.

Within the latest X5 family, this six cylinder 40d is arguably one of the most desirable. Offering more pace than the 30d yet easier on cost than the top spec M50d or petrol 50i, it might also seem a more seductive on-road prospect than the four cylinder 25d. So a tempting all-rounder, by any yardstick.

The new X5 is lighter and more efficient than before – emissions are surprisingly modest at 166g/km

All new X5s come with 8-speed automatic transmission and in third generation guise, BMW has again re-worked the formula, upping efficiency while lowering weight and emissions to keep its self styled and hugely successful SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle) – to use the BMW argot, the rest of us know them as an SUV –  sharp and on the pace.

You can order the 40d in SE form or in this racier BMW X5 M Sport trim, as reviewed here. A couple of design packages are also available to let you personalise the X5 still further.

This latest X5 (codenamed F15) is built in the US, as was the previous generation. The X5 is again big on premium on-road presence, with luxury, comfort and Efficient Dynamics technology also very much part of the picture.

Still, for the business user, how does this particular BMW X5 M Sport edition shape up?
