Toyota 1.33 iQ3

What is it?

TOP grade version of Toyota’s miniature marvel, the iQ. The iQ3 features a 1.3-litre engine and stop-start technology. The extra engine capacity gives the iQ an additional 30bhp at 97bhp over the 1.0-litre version. The iQ3 costs £12,017 on the road.

What’s hot?

  • A brilliant piece of engineering
  • The iQ is sensationally small – under 3m – yet can take four people
  • Handles like a go-kart with very direct steering
  • Despite size, has grown-up safety kit…
  • …including world-first rear window airbag
  • Only 10% company car tax
  • Fuel economy of 58.9mpg

What’s not?

  • Miniaturisation compromises functionality
  • Radio function on steering wheel is fiddly…
  • …and often won’t connect to your desired station
  • Rear head restraints need to be removed before rear seats fold
  • Which isn’t easy – and required if you want additional boot area
  • Misses out on 100% first year writing down allowance (WDA)
  • Despite the bigger engine, long motorway journeys best avoided
  • Expensive compared to other city cars
  • Four-cylinder engine lacks character of 1.0 three-cylinder unit

Business Car Manager Road Test Rating

The Toyota iQ3, for all its ingenuity, misses the mark in this bigger-engined format as well as being too expensive – the purer iQ with its 1.0-litre engine is the much better business bet. And you’ll also get 100% WDA too.
