Audi A6 2.0 TDI SE

Story: RALPH MORTON

I love this ad – ‘My dad’s an alien’.

The quirky dialogue, the world weary look of the child at the baffling antics of her father…and the car!

A spaceship is a good way to sum up the Audi A6. It’s a huge executive car – much bigger than my predecessor A6 TDIe – providing acres of space inside.

(You’ll also notice it’s bigger when it comes to parking, too – if you live in a street with tight parking be warned.)

It glides along the motorway, too, putting on effortless miles that reward you with 55mpg + on long business runs, especially if you use the Audi Drive Select and put into ‘Efficient’ mode. (If you can’t be bothered leave it in automatic mode and let the car sort out what you want.)

Such as this trip (below) to Audi HQ for a meeting with Audi’s genial fleet marketing manager Nathan Dennis.

But that sort of space age technology permeates the Audi A6. The ability to finesse the car to your exact liking enabled through the MMI (Multi Media Interface) system.

And that includes functions such as checking the oil. No peering under the bonnet and inspecting dipsticks. No, no, it’s much more sophisticated, more space age. Back to the MMI, then. Select oil level – see picture next page:

And the next visual tells you if  you need to top up. In this case, no I didn’t need to!

It’s not all breathtakingly sophisticated in the Audi A6. The stop-start fuel saving system thumps in and out more obtrusively than it should. And the ‘corners’ of the car are difficult to place in an odd way. I checked with a colleague driving a new Audi A6 Avant and he concurred that it was difficult to place.

But that aside, the Audi A6, which rides and handles like no A6 before it especially in this SE guise, is really some car. Big, relaxing, sophisticated, it does everything a small business owner would want.

And there are some very good business car leasing deals as well. All that big German engineering for £318 a month through Audi Direct. A VW Golf GTD with virtually identical power costs the same per month!

Some car, some spaceship!

Footnote

While we’re on the subject of the Audi A6, congratulations to the Audi design team. Their efforts have been recognised in winning product design for the Audi A6 at The International Design Excellence Award 2012 along with the red dot design award too.
