Company car review on the Audi A6 2.0 TDi

What is it?

AN Audi with a mission: to claw business away from its big two German rivals, BMW and Mercedes.

This new Audi A6 has a lighter, part-aluminium body with refreshed styling. It also has engine updates to improve the efficiency and lower running costs.

In lots of detail areas, you notice the difference and general sprucing-up of this new A6. It has crisper dynamics, better refinement, improved auto transmission, beefier-feeling brakes and a general uplift on equipment.

The mid-range Audi was due for a makeover, and this has done what was needed. It doesn’t look much different, but lots of small changes add up to a worthwhile all-round improvement

It’s still front-wheel-drive then?

Of course. Audi wasn’t about to undergo a revolution. So as before, the base models are front-drive, and further up the range the A6 has quattro all-wheel-drive.

This is the fourth generation A6, carrying a badge that has been around for 20 years, since the first one was launched in 1994. Although if you include the Audi 100 from six years before that, this one could be deemed the fifth generation of its kind.

Enough history. This latest A6 has upped its game and is well up to the mark in keeping pace with its two key rivals, the Mercedes E and BMW 5. There is no bold overtaking manoeuvre here, though. Audi has not put a noise out in front of the others, but ensured that the A6 is engineered and equipped as a freshly viable rival.
