Audi A1 1.2 TFSI SE
What is it?
THE least powerful and smallest engine in Audi’s MINI-rivalling line-up – but potentially the best. Latest 86PS 1.2-litre turbo unit costs from £13,420 in SE trim and is capable of returning 55.4mpg and emitting just 118g/km of CO2. Is it a better bet than its entry-level MINI and Citroen DS3 competitors? We took a test drive to find out.
What’s hot?
- Despite the small capacity, it’s punchy…
- …feeling quicker than its 0-62mph time of 11.7 seconds suggests
- Plus there’s decent go on the motorway as well
- Factor in 160Nm of torque and it’s okay at overtaking too
- As well as being economical, road tax is free in the first year
- Little engine is 100kg lighter than its diesel brother…
- …which makes for more agile handling and precise steering
- Not to mention a taut yet comfortable ride
- Air-con, iPod dock, 16-inch alloys come as standard…
- …as do good looks and a classy cabin with more space than a MINI
- Minimal company car tax
What’s not?
- The 98bhp MINI One is marginally cheaper…
- …while the A1 is £1015 more than a 95bhp Citroen DS3 VTi DSign
- Metallic paint costs £510 extra, while contrasting roof rails add £350…
- …and you’d want to spec both to maximise residuals
- A MINI is more fun to drive
